I am searching for an annuity list I had in my possession, but have now misplaced! Can anybody tell me if there is such a document as an 1869 Annuity List for the Mdewakanton band? It was several pages long and had a list of all the chiefs on the front page, then on the subsequent pages it listed all the men under each chief. It was all written in long hand. My gr. gr. grandfather was towards the back page (third from the back if I remember correctly). His name is Tatecanrpi.
I have the 1860 annuity list, but could have sworn there was an 1869 one as well. Unless I just imagined it!!! Help!! Thanks - - - - Sominex

Could you mean the 1869 Santee Roll? I am thinking that if an annuity roll was done it probably wasnt done for mdewakanton in minnesota after the removal act until sometime later. Seems possible however, for the santee people to be referred to as mdewakanton. I am also thinking our friend Vicky has this list but not digital and has kindly offered to do lookups.

What I have is the 1869 Santee Census. I find the name Tatecanrpi listed in Owancaduta's band. Listed are- 1 male, 2 females, 2 horses and 1 gun. Is this the document you are looking for? Leave me a PM with your email address and I'll scan this page for you. There is no indication on this census where it was taken, nor by whom. The cover page simply states- "Census for 1869" and on a page inside it states, "Census of the Santee Sioux taken 1869" (Looks like it may have a month, but it is not legible.)

Part of this census has been transcribed by Sara elsewhere on this site. What an undertaking! This thing is a nightmare to read! Bravo Sara!

Lori, I know I sent that to you, you silly.
Tamara, THe 1869 Census taken at the Santee AGENCY was all Mdewakanton men and their families. In most of the Census' taken at this Agency it states the Mdewakanton at the Santee Agency. THe original Santee band of the early 1800's just absorbed into all the Dakota and Lakota bands. I really wish the Dakota at Santee Nebraska would change there name from the Santee Sioux Nation to the Mdewakanton Nation at the Santee Agency, or something close to that. They are listed with the Government as a Nation! Not a communtiy. Thats cool!!! You girls have a great day!!

I agree with SARA: WE are the MDEWAKANTON NATION Curtis M. Kitto Enrolled Member Santee Sioux Nation I agree. I cant even count how in reading through historical collections and other history documents I have seen the words the Mdewakanton Santee Sioux. Maybe we should start collecting such historic references... as if basic Dakota history werent enough! lol

Hi Lori, I will email this page to you tonight. It is a large census, and on jumbo NARA paper, but I can do this page you need pretty quick. Have a great weekend! Vicky

I agree with SARA: WE are the MDEWAKANTON NATION Curtis M. Kitto Enrolled Member Santee Sioux Nation does anyone know in what writings by S R Riggs does he say that the Isanti are the only ones who can rightfully be called Mdewakanton? Or something close to that statement? I am sure I have read that but cant recall where.

Hi Tamara, I don't see these names- Sihahanska or Asa Lovejoy You might ask Sara to look, though. NARA chopped off some of my pages, so I think I have some names missing on my copies. :-(
